Undergraduate Training Initiatives
BIO5 partners with other units on campus to better prepare undergraduates for the bioindustry workplace. Certain partnerships involve development and coordination of undergraduate bioscience laboratory training courses and workshops. The Institute enhances training by supporting courses in laboratory techniques, regulatory issues, and bioethics related to the molecular life sciences. A partnership with Eller College will organize teams of business and science students to develop programs facilitating the advancement of university entrepreneurship and technology transfer.
The Institute has been and will continue to be a strong supporter of undergraduate research experiences. UA is a Research I university and, as such, offers its undergraduates a large number of opportunities to pursue research. BIO5 faculty members train undergraduates, and the Institute has provided support for UBRP (Undergraduate Biology Research Program) students. UBRP is a nationally recognized program, supported by private and public funds, that enables top undergraduates to do research. BIO5 is supporting UBRP undergraduate students, majoring in physics, computer science, mathematics or engineering, who pursue research in biosciences laboratories.
A biotech internship program has been established in partnership with Pima Community College to provide laboratory research experiences for top Pima students interested in biotechnology training.
